What Are Some Causes of Crooked Teeth?

What Are Some Causes of Crooked Teeth?

Sometimes the teeth find ways to twist and turn out of alignment, no matter how well we care for our smiles. This is unfortunate because having a crooked smile can lower our self-esteem and even make daily tasks difficult. To tell you a little more about why you might have crooked teeth in Johnson City, Tennessee, our orthodontist, Dr. Daniel Bradshaw, is happy to explain the causes.

The first cause is the natural way the mouth develops and the way the teeth move into place. This can have a lot to do with hereditary factors. Sometimes it’s because you have large teeth, extra teeth, missing teeth, widely spaced teeth, or a small jaw. These things can cause crowding in the mouth or even drifting teeth that shift positions because of the wide spaces in the mouth.

The second cause is an oral habit that adds unnatural pressure to the teeth. These habits can include anything like tongue thrusting, thumb sucking, losing baby teeth prematurely, and even having a poor breathing airway that is caused by swollen or enlarged tonsils or adenoids.

Do you have any questions about the causes behind crooked teeth? Or would you like to schedule an appointment to see if orthodontic treatment is right for you? If so, please contact Bradshaw & Hathaway at 423-929-1126 at your earliest convenience. We are more than happy to help you!
